Winter weather is on its way, folks! A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect, so let's break down what you need to know about the upcoming conditions across the Piedmont Triad and beyond.
Get ready for a chilly day! Temperatures will peak early, hovering around 36°F in the morning, before taking a nosedive as the day progresses. The freezing point will be reached by mid-afternoon.
In the Triad area, expect precipitation to start as cold rain, gradually mixing with snow later this morning. Around lunchtime, the changeover to all snow is expected, eventually tapering off before dinner.
Here's the key: Snow accumulation will be around 1/2 inch in the Triad. Further south, where it will mostly be rain, the accumulation will be less. North of the Triad, closer to the North Carolina/Virginia border, anticipate snow totals nearing 1 inch. The mountains could see up to 3 inches!
As the night falls, skies will clear, and temperatures will plummet into the upper teens to lower twenties. This will cause any wet surfaces to freeze, making the morning commute potentially treacherous.
Tuesday will remain quite cold, with highs only reaching the upper 30s under partly cloudy skies.
But here's where it gets interesting: A fast-moving cold front will arrive on Wednesday, pushing temperatures into the lower 50s. While skies will be mostly cloudy, we're not expecting any precipitation as the front passes.
Behind the front, Thursday and Friday will see highs in the mid-40s, with partly cloudy conditions.
The weekend kicks off with mostly sunny skies on Saturday and highs in the upper 40s. Then, another weaker cold front will bring highs down to the lower 40s on Sunday.
