The recent holiday special of Two Doors Down carries a poignant significance, especially after the passing of its cherished co-writer, Simon Carlyle, in 2023. Initially, following his death, the cast believed they had seen the last of this beloved sitcom, which depicts the lives of neighbors in suburban Glasgow. However, fans can now rejoice as the show is set to return with a Christmas special on BBC One, blending nostalgia with bittersweet memories.
This delightful sitcom, featuring talents like Arabella Weir, Alex Norton, Elaine C Smith, Doon Mackichan, and Jonathan Watson, began as a standalone episode in 2013. It gained momentum, leading to a full series commissioned in 2016 that became a nationwide favorite. Carlyle, who collaborated closely with Gregor Sharp for over two decades—including projects like Happy Hollidays and Thin Ice—was only 48 when he passed away.
Initially grappling with the loss of his dear friend, Sharp assumed he had written the final episode. Yet, interest in continuing the show sparked anew. "It was obviously a terrible time after Simon passed," he recalled. "Eventually, the concept of creating perhaps one more episode emerged, which felt feasible. Once we discussed it with producers, the cast, and everyone involved with the show, there was overwhelming enthusiasm to move forward, leading us to where we are today."
On the set of the Christmas special, which is slated to air on Christmas Eve, Sharp expressed how comforting it has been to have the entire cast and crew together again. "We all wanted to ensure that Simon would have been proud of what we were creating," he remarked. "That was a significant concern for all of us, but ultimately, we feel confident that Simon would have liked this direction. The unity displayed by everyone has truly helped us navigate through this tough period, transforming our time together into a joyous reunion."
Carlyle's unexpected death sent ripples through the entertainment industry; he had penned over 40 episodes of Two Doors Down and recently co-wrote comedian Alan Carr's autobiographical sitcom, Changing Ends. His impressive portfolio also includes notable works like Boy Meets Girl, Psychobitches, and No Holds Bard.
Arabella Weir, who portrays Beth in the series, was eager to revisit her character. "I was very much hoping for a revival, though I wasn’t sure if it would happen. When the news broke, I was ecstatic! The script is exceptionally well-crafted," she shared. Weir noted that Sharp’s writing skillfully invoked fond memories, making Carlyle’s spirit resonate throughout the cast. "Gregor has beautifully woven memories into the narrative. Simon’s presence feels ever-present, yet in a joyful and celebratory manner. He would undoubtedly be thrilled to see us back together, as we all are."
Elaine C Smith mirrored these sentiments. "After Simon’s death, I truly thought we wouldn’t create another episode, and honestly, the thought of it was overwhelming," she admitted. "However, reuniting with everyone—the cast, crew, and production team—was heartwarming. Everyone was excited and proud to return, and it truly felt like Simon was with us, making the laughter even more meaningful."
During the show's hiatus, Smith realized just how cherished the series and its characters had become, including her own role as Christine. "A friend mentioned that someone said they couldn’t stand watching me because Christine is so horrible," she laughed. "And yes, she is, but that’s the beauty of playing such a character. Everyone knows a woman like her—unfiltered and unapologetically bold, complete with her fabulous outfits."
Smith emphasized the importance of humor over vanity in her acting career spanning over four decades. "Ultimately, being funny outweighs the need to appear attractive. Though there are times I glance at myself and think, ‘Forget it.’"
So, what can viewers anticipate from the return to Latimer Crescent? "Well, it’s Christmas!" Weir teased. "There aren’t any shocking plot twists—one aspect I appreciate about the script. We’re not suddenly relocating to Australia or heading off on a tropical holiday; it’s precisely what you would expect, albeit with some interesting twists."
Sharp added a hint of intrigue, saying, "Time has moved forward, so some characters have experienced life changes since the last airing. That’s a secret we’ll keep until the show premiers. Overall, it remains a typical Christmas gathering at Eric and Beth’s, with everyone arriving and disrupting their plans for a peaceful celebration."
With emotions running high and a mix of anticipation and nostalgia, this Christmas special is poised to be a heartfelt tribute to both the show and the legacy of its late co-writer.
