A tragic incident has unfolded on Koh Samui, where a Russian tourist was found dead after falling from a viewpoint, raising concerns and questions about safety in such popular tourist spots.
On February 5, the lifeless body of a man was discovered on a beach below the Na Phralan Viewpoint by another foreign traveler, who promptly alerted the local authorities at Koh Samui Police Station. This swift action initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate event.
Upon arrival, police were accompanied by rescue workers from the Kusol Songkro Koh Samui Foundation, as well as medical personnel from Koh Samui Hospital, all of whom faced significant challenges due to the difficult terrain. The rescue team had to first ascend to the viewpoint before carefully making their descent to the beach, where the deceased was located. The path they navigated was described as steep, narrow, and littered with rocks, necessitating extreme caution throughout the recovery operation.
The foreign man was found lying face-up, suffering from devastating injuries to his head and neck region. Medical professionals reported severe trauma, including a shattered skull and brain matter that was scattered near the body. An alarming detail noted by officers was that the man was gripping a tree branch tightly, indicating he may have attempted to catch himself during his fall.
Nearby, a red bag was located containing two passports along with a hotel key, which aided police in identifying the deceased as Iliar Bichurin, a 36-year-old Russian national. At the time of the incident, he was dressed in black shorts, a long-sleeved black shirt, and trainers.
Importantly, investigators found no evidence suggesting theft or a violent altercation at the scene. They surmise that Bichurin may have fallen while trying to climb down to the beach, perhaps reaching for the tree branch in a desperate attempt to slow his descent. Unfortunately, it appears the branch could not withstand his weight, resulting in his fatal plunge.
Reports indicate that Bichurin entered Thailand through the Kuan Dode Immigration Checkpoint in Satun province and subsequently checked into a hotel in the Mae Nam area on Koh Samui. Following the discovery of his body, authorities have transported it to Koh Samui Hospital for a comprehensive autopsy to ascertain the official cause of death. In addition, police plan to work with the Russian Embassy in Thailand to inform the man's family and facilitate any necessary arrangements moving forward.
