Imagine creating something incredible with your oldest friends – that's precisely what's happening with The Halo Effect. In a recent interview, Mikael Stanne, the voice of The Halo Effect and a metal icon, dropped some exciting news that will have fans worldwide buzzing: their third studio album is on the horizon, and he believes it's going to be their best yet!
Speaking with Futuro radio in Chile (https://www.futuro.cl/), Stanne addressed the burning question on many fans' minds: when will they be touring South America? While immediate plans aren't in place, Stanne reassured listeners that a tour is definitely on the cards once the new album drops. "No real plans right now, but we are working on our third album right now, so as soon as that is out, like by the end of the year or something like that, it's gonna be time to tour again, of course. So, I hope we can come [to Chile] and do a proper tour," he stated, as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET. This gives us a rough timeline: expect new music and tour announcements towards the end of the year!
But what makes this project so special? Stanne emphasizes the camaraderie within the band. "It's super fun. I mean, it really is like a passion project among friends. So, to get to travel together with my friends who I've known since I was a teenager, it's pretty awesome." He further added, "And the new album is shaping up to be incredible. I just heard one song today, and, yeah, it's gonna be fantastic. So I hope we can come [to Chile after the LP is released]." This isn't just a band; it's a reunion of lifelong friends creating music they love. And that passion shines through in their work.
For those unfamiliar, The Halo Effect is a supergroup of sorts, comprised of five former members of the legendary Swedish metal band In Flames: Jesper Strömblad (guitar), Daniel Svensson (drums), Peter Iwers (bass), Niclas Engelin (guitar), and, of course, Mikael Stanne (vocals). Think of it as a melting pot of talent and experience, all channeled into a new, exciting sound while retaining the core elements that made In Flames so influential. This shared history is more than just a footnote; it's a vital ingredient in the band's chemistry.
Before we get too far ahead, let's recap what The Halo Effect has been up to. Last November, they treated fans to the "We Are Shadows" EP via Nuclear Blast. This wasn't just any EP; it was a collection of five cover songs, each hand-picked by a different band member, offering a unique glimpse into their individual influences. And this is the part most people miss: Choosing covers is a great way for a band to show their fans who influenced them, but it can also be a way for them to experiment with new sounds and styles.
Their second full-length album, "March Of The Unheard," dropped in January 2025, also via Nuclear Blast Records. Shortly after its release, The Halo Effect embarked on their first-ever headline tour in Europe, a significant milestone for any band. They weren't alone, though! They brought along industrial powerhouse PAIN as a special guest, and Finnish melodic death metal rising stars BLOODRED HOURGLASS as support, creating a truly unforgettable lineup.
Their debut album, "Days Of The Lost," made a massive splash in the summer of 2022, hitting the No. 1 spot on the official Swedish chart. This was a monumental achievement, believed to be the first time a debut album from a metal act had ever topped the chart in Sweden during its first week! "Days Of The Lost" also achieved impressive success in Germany, landing at No. 6. It’s hard to overstate how difficult it is for a metal band, especially a new one, to top the charts in their home country.
It's also important to acknowledge Jesper Strömblad's personal journey. A founding member of In Flames, Strömblad bravely stepped away from the band in February 2010 to prioritize his recovery from alcohol addiction. His bandmates in The Halo Effect have been incredibly supportive, even enlisting Patrik Jensen of The Haunted to fill in for him at gigs when needed. This level of support underscores the deep bond within the band and their commitment to each other's well-being.
But here's where it gets controversial... Some fans argue that The Halo Effect's sound is too similar to In Flames, while others celebrate it as a return to the band's classic melodic death metal roots. What do you think? Does The Halo Effect offer a fresh perspective, or is it simply a nostalgic echo of the past? Share your thoughts in the comments below! And with a new album on the way, the future looks bright for The Halo Effect. Will this be the album that solidifies their place as a leading force in modern metal? Only time will tell!
