Temple House: A Quietly Powerful Modern Home in Melbourne (2025)

A serene yet impactful residence in Melbourne, Australia, draws inspiration from temple architecture, showcasing a harmonious blend of contemporary design and historical influence. The home, named Temple House, was meticulously crafted by J Kidman Architecture, with interior design contributions from Golden and Studio Tali Roth. This single-storey dwelling was envisioned for a family of five on a slender plot in the Hawthorn neighborhood of Melbourne.

The architectural layout is a masterpiece of spatial organization, centered around two garden courtyards that optimize natural light on the linear site. This design choice mirrors the layout of a basilica or place of worship, as noted by J Kidman Architecture's founder, James Reid. The name 'Temple House' and the 'quiet but powerful forms' of the building were born from this comparison.

The interior design, influenced by the temple theme, features bathrooms designed by Golden that were recently recognized in the bathroom interior category of the Dezeen Awards 2025. Reid describes the plan as a 'remixed basilica,' emphasizing strong axial relationships and a ceremonial atmosphere. The living space, with its large trapezoid-shaped roof, sliding glass doors, and frameless glazing, creates a 'lantern' effect, offering panoramic views of the two courtyards and a geometric swimming pool.

The exterior showcases geometric forms clad in pale, bagged masonry, adding a subtle texture. Interior spaces are characterized by a green marble kitchen, a dark green modular sofa, and a stainless steel dining table, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere despite the use of brutalist materials like stone, pale wood, and metals. The smaller bedrooms are positioned at the southern end of the central corridor, while a den serves as a versatile guest bedroom.

This project joins a collection of recent Melbourne homes featured on Dezeen, including Hedge and Arbour House by Studio Bright and a windowless bungalow designed by David Hicks. The photography for this article is credited to Timothy Kaye, capturing the essence of this unique residential space.
