Now, picture towering wind turbines disrupting this idyllic scene, just 10 kilometers offshore. This is the reality facing the residents of Seaspray, a small Victorian community, as they fight against an international wind energy giant’s plans to transform their beloved coastline.
Seaspray, with its quaint shops, surf life saving club, and caravan park, might seem like a quiet coastal retreat, but its residents are anything but complacent. Last month, nearly 400 people gathered in protest against the Blue Mackerel proposal, a joint venture by JERA Nex BP, which aims to install 60 to 70 wind turbines across a 163-square-kilometer area of ocean between Seaspray and Woodside. But here’s where it gets controversial: while the project promises to generate 1 gigawatt of renewable energy by 2033—enough to power 750,000 homes annually—locals argue that the cost to their community far outweighs the benefits.
The federal government’s decision to grant the project major status in December has only fueled the residents’ frustration. Marty Jackson, spokesman for the Seaspray Wind Farm Strategy Group, emphasizes that the issue goes beyond aesthetics. 'Our 90 miles of pristine beach and uninterrupted views are just the tip of the iceberg,' he explains. 'We’re also deeply concerned about the erosion of our town’s social fabric and the potential impact on mental health.' And this is the part most people miss: the group isn’t opposed to renewable energy—they simply believe the turbines should be built further offshore, where they’d be less intrusive and potentially more efficient. 'Projects like Iberdrola’s, located 25 kilometers out, could generate more energy with less impact,' Jackson points out.
For residents like Bernadette Gray, the fear of losing Seaspray’s unique charm is palpable. 'Our dark skies are a treasure—you can see every star, even the auroras that draw visitors from far and wide,' she says. 'The thought of light and noise pollution from these turbines is heartbreaking.' Gillian McIwain adds that VicGrid’s plans to establish shoreline crossing areas for the wind farms have only deepened the community’s anxiety. 'It feels like our voices don’t matter,' she laments.
David Ghaly, project director for Blue Mackerel, acknowledges the concerns but insists the project is confined to the 10-kilometer license area awarded by the Commonwealth government. 'We can’t make the turbines invisible, and they will be visible from the shore,' he admits. 'But we’re committed to engaging with the community and exploring ways to mitigate the impact.' Ghaly suggests a community benefits program, but Jackson dismisses the offer as presumptuous. 'We don’t want benefits—we want our community preserved,' he asserts.
