The 'Disneyland' Hospital Scandal: A Chief Nurse's Comment Sparks Outrage
The alleged comment made by Scotland's former chief nursing officer, Prof. Fiona McQueen, about families affected by a hospital infection scandal being offered a trip to Disneyland has sparked intense debate in the Scottish Parliament. The comment, described as 'shameful' by Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, has raised questions about the handling of patient safety and the response to a public inquiry.
During a meeting in December 2019, Prof. McQueen reportedly questioned why the local health board did not offer affected families £50,000, suggesting it would cover a holiday at the US theme park, rather than acknowledging safety defects that had caused harm. This comes as the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) has admitted that problems with the water system at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) likely caused infections in child cancer patients, initially denying this.
The public inquiry into the design and construction of the QEUH is ongoing, with seven deaths linked to infections under investigation by prosecutors. Prof. McQueen, who advised ministers on nursing, midwifery, and healthcare, retired as chief nursing officer in March 2021. She has denied making the comment, insisting her priority was patient safety.
The controversy has led to calls for the inquiry chairman, Lord Brodie, to consider the Scottish government's role in the construction and opening of the QEUH. Scottish Conservative health spokesman Sandesh Gulhane described the reported comments as 'absolutely disgusting,' while grieving families express fury at the callousness of such a senior official's remarks.
As the inquiry continues, the impact of this scandal on patient safety and public trust in the healthcare system remains a critical issue, with many questioning the priorities of those in leadership positions.
