Get ready, Manchester! Construction has officially kicked off for what will soon be the United Kingdom's tallest skyscraper outside of the bustling capital, London. This ambitious project, a whopping £360 million undertaking, comes with a surprising and rather glamorous connection to Hollywood royalty.

And the Hollywood connection? None other than the legendary Robert De Niro! The iconic actor is a significant investor, holding a stake in Nobu Hospitality, the esteemed brand that will be operating this magnificent skyscraper. When it opens its doors in approximately six years, it will proudly claim the title of the tallest building in the UK beyond London.
De Niro, at 82 years young, has spoken highly of Manchester, describing it as a city that is "creative, passionate and strong." He expressed his eagerness to return for the grand opening, stating, "I plan to be around." It's clear his commitment to this project runs deep.
Beyond the luxury residences and dining, the skyscraper will also feature a swimming pool, a spa, a gym, and a garden. It's designed to be more than just a building; it's envisioned as a complete lifestyle destination.
Nobu Hospitality is collaborating with Salboy, a prominent property developer, to bring this landmark to life. Their vision for the hotel is ambitious: "More than a home, this will be a fully immersive lifestyle, shaped by the soul of Manchester and defined by the Nobu way."
De Niro himself, the celebrated Oscar winner, shared his positive impressions of Manchester, noting the warmth of its people and the city's "real character." He emphasized his pride in being a part of its ongoing development.

The Nobu brand itself has a fascinating origin story. Launched in 1994 by Robert De Niro, acclaimed film producer Meir Taper, and the culinary genius Nobu Matsuhisa, their first restaurant in New York was an instant sensation. This success paved the way for a global empire, with dozens of locations now gracing cities worldwide, including a notable presence in London that began 35 years ago.
Simon Ismail, the managing director of Salboy, highlighted Manchester's sustained growth and its appeal to international brands. He believes that attracting a name like Nobu, with its reputation for quality and global exposure, will serve as a significant catalyst for further development in the city.
The skyscraper is strategically located next to the Deansgate-Castlefield tram stop and was designed by the renowned architect Ian Simpson. The 452 apartments, to be known as Nobu Residences Manchester, are anticipated to hit the market later this year, offering some of the most coveted addresses in the city. The interior design promises a unique fusion, drawing inspiration from Nobu's signature Japanese aesthetic and Manchester's rich industrial heritage.
Adding to the development, a second, 23-storey property on Great Bridgewater Street will offer 133 flats specifically for the affordable homes market, ensuring the project benefits a wider range of residents.
Bev Craig, the leader of Manchester City Council, hailed the project as a "symbol that international businesses are choosing Manchester." She humorously remarked, "It’s not everyday you watch Robert De Niro take out an apartment in Deansgate is it?"
