A recent public opinion poll has sent shockwaves through Ontario, with a majority of residents calling for Labour Minister David Piccini's resignation or removal from Doug Ford's cabinet. The poll, conducted by Abacus Data and commissioned by CUPE Ontario, reveals a deep-seated concern among Ontarians over the handling of the Skills Development Fund.
But here's where it gets controversial: the fund, worth a whopping $2.5 billion, has been under intense scrutiny due to allegations that Piccini awarded millions to firms with low to medium-priority projects, despite the presence of registered lobbyists. This has sparked a heated debate, with many questioning the integrity of the selection process.
The Auditor General's report, released in October, adds fuel to the fire. It found that Piccini's office was not selecting funding applicants based on their overall scores, raising concerns about preferential treatment and a lack of transparency. Evaluators have also noted an inconsistency in how the Ministry determines funding amounts, leaving many questions unanswered.
And this is the part most people miss: despite the Auditor General's findings, Piccini has denied any wrongdoing. Premier Ford, on the other hand, stands by the fund, calling it "one of the greatest programs" his government has created. However, all three opposition parties are united in their call for Piccini's resignation.
The latest Abacus Data poll shows that even Progressive Conservative Party voters are divided, with 43% agreeing that Piccini should step down or leave the cabinet. Only 19% believe he should remain in his role.
CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn sums it up, saying, "Calls for accountability are growing louder. Minister Piccini has misused public funds, turning the Skills Development Fund into a slush fund for Ford Conservative insiders."
This scandal has sparked a wider discussion about the Ford government's contract and grant awarding practices, with 46% of poll respondents believing it's part of a broader issue.
As the controversy unfolds, representatives from Ford and Piccini's offices remain silent, leaving the public to speculate and demand answers.
