Onondaga County Water Authority (OCWA) Reports Progress in Water Conservation and Repair Efforts
CICERO, N.Y. — In a recent update, the Executive Director of OCWA, Jeff Brown, and County Executive Ryan McMahon shared positive news about the ongoing water conservation initiatives. The county has successfully averted a potential water crisis, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the community and the authority's swift actions.
Brown emphasized the ongoing conservation efforts, stating, 'Current water conservation levels are crucial in ensuring everyone's access to water. We appreciate the cooperation of our customers.' The authority's proactive measures have significantly contributed to maintaining water supply reserves.
Despite the ongoing repair work, Brown provided a timeline for the transmission pipe's restoration. He mentioned that it will take at least two weeks to complete the repairs and restore normal water flow. The installation of metal sheeting to protect workers is nearing completion, and dewatering the area is a priority to ensure safe working conditions. The main transmission line is scheduled to be dewatered by January 9, followed by the installation of the new pipe on January 16.
McMahon highlighted the positive impact of the community's conservation efforts, stating, 'More water has been conserved than used, thanks to the collective actions. Our reserves have increased from 20% to 25%, demonstrating the success of our initiatives.' He assured the public that the initial concern of water shortages in specific areas has been addressed, provided the current progress continues.
During the news conference, OCWA showcased photos of the construction site, featuring heavy machinery and National Grid workers monitoring power lines. The authority's efforts have been widely recognized, with a free water distribution site set up at Fayetteville-Manlius High School, distributing over 3,000 cases to support conservation.
Initially, a few leaks were repaired ahead of the shutdown, causing a significant drop in water pressure. However, OCWA successfully managed the situation, and McMahon expressed gratitude for the community's behavioral changes. He stated, 'We averted a potential crisis, and the increased reserves are a testament to the effectiveness of our conservation efforts and the dedication of our partners and the OCWA team.'
The authority's proactive approach and community collaboration have played a vital role in maintaining water supply stability, ensuring a reliable water source for the county's residents.
