"Here's where it gets controversial..." Water from a Martian mountain, long ago, seeped into the dunes, creating a unique environment. This water, rich in minerals like gypsum, soaked the sand from below, leaving behind a mineral signature similar to Earth's deserts. These minerals, as Atri explains, "can trap and preserve organic material, offering a glimpse into Mars' ancient past."

And this is the part most people miss: Mars' evolution was not a simple transition from wet to dry. Even after its surface waters disappeared, small pockets of life may have persisted underground. "Even after its lakes and rivers dried up, Mars could have still supported life," Atri suggests.
