Jakarta's Proactive Tree Pruning: Protecting Residents from Rainy Season & Strong Winds (2025)

A City's Proactive Approach to Tree Maintenance: Ensuring Safety During the Rainy Season

In Jakarta, the city's Parks and Forests Service is taking a bold step to protect its residents and road users. With the rainy season approaching, they're implementing a comprehensive tree maintenance plan, but here's where it gets controversial...

The service, known as Distamhut, is simultaneously pruning trees in five areas to prepare for potential strong winds and heavy rainfall. "It's a necessary preventive measure," says Fajar Sauri, the head of Distamhut. "We want to ensure the safety of everyone."

But here's the twist: they're not just pruning. Distamhut is also rejuvenating trees in six priority locations with high mobility. Fajar personally monitors these operations, ensuring they're done efficiently and safely.

The six priority areas include Jalan Panjang in Kebon Jeruk, Jalan Prof. Moh. Yamin Sutan Syahrir in Menteng, and several other key roads. All pruning and rejuvenation activities are scheduled for nights or weekends to minimize disruption to residents' mobility.

Distamhut's routine activities are impressive. From January to early November, they've tended to over 63,000 trees and conducted health checks on over 6,500. But their work doesn't stop there. They also employ advanced risk mapping techniques, using spatial data, visual inspections, and root condition assessments to identify high-risk trees.

High-risk trees receive specialized care, from intensive treatment to mass reduction of branches. In some cases, they even install stewards and recommend tree replacements if safety is compromised. Distamhut also coordinates closely with local sub-districts and sub-districts to rapidly respond to reports of lopsided, broken, or problematic trees.

Fajar emphasizes the importance of a swift response, especially during extreme weather. "All reports are officially followed up within 24 hours. We want to ensure the city's green spaces are safe for everyone," he says.

To facilitate this, Distamhut has set up a 24-hour alert system at the provincial and city levels. Residents can contact these posts for any tree-related concerns or emergencies. The contact details are provided, ensuring a quick response.

Fajar concludes, "Our fleet and equipment must be ready at all times. Communication between regions is crucial. In emergencies, we must act swiftly and support each other for the well-being of our residents."

This proactive approach to tree maintenance is a testament to Jakarta's commitment to safety and environmental stewardship. But what do you think? Is this an effective strategy? Or is there room for improvement? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
