The rollercoaster ride of Auburn football has taken another sharp turn, as head coach Hugh Freeze has been fired after just over two seasons. This decision, announced by athletic director John Cohen, marks the end of Freeze's tenure, which was marked by both promise and disappointment.
Freeze's record at Auburn stood at 15-19, a performance that ultimately led to his dismissal. The final blow came with a lackluster home loss to Kentucky, sealing his fate. Freeze's contract, a six-year deal worth $49 million signed in 2022 to replace Bryan Harsin, will see him receive a buyout of $15.8 million. This firing makes Freeze the eighth Power Four coach to be let go this season.
Cohen's statement expressed appreciation for Freeze's efforts but emphasized the program's championship aspirations, signaling an immediate search for a new leader. Defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin has been appointed as the interim head coach.
The pressure was on Freeze, especially with the SEC spotlight shining brightly on Auburn during the offseason. His SEC record of 6-16 tells a story of struggles. The team suffered heartbreaking home losses to teams like New Mexico State, Cal, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, and Oklahoma.
Offensively, the Tigers faced challenges, scoring 24 points or fewer in 17 of his 22 SEC games. Close games often slipped away, including several this season due to controversial calls. Freeze, who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier in the year, had improved the roster with top-10 recruiting classes and key transfers, including quarterback Jackson Arnold and wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr. With a favorable 2025 schedule and a contract extending to 2028, it seemed like the stage was set for a breakthrough.
Freeze himself expressed optimism in April, stating that the program was "on its way to getting where we want to be and where we should be." But the Tigers never quite reached that destination. Despite a promising 3-0 start in the non-conference games, including a dominant win over Baylor, the momentum faltered in league play. The team was competitive in the first four SEC games but lost all of them. A fourth-quarter lead against Missouri was lost in a prime-time game.
After a road win at Arkansas, the Tigers couldn't sustain their success. The final straw was the 10-3 loss to Kentucky, which led to "Fire Hugh!" chants from the crowd. The Tigers' record fell to 4-5 overall and 1-5 in the SEC. Freeze admitted his frustration, acknowledging the lack of results despite his dedication.
Freeze's tenure ends without a winning season at Auburn. The last winning season for the Tigers was in 2020. They've only had more than eight wins twice since their 2013 national championship appearance. Furthermore, Freeze's record against ranked teams was 1-12.
Freeze expressed his understanding of the impatience surrounding the program, stating that they were "so dang close."
This marks Auburn's fourth coaching change in seven seasons. The school will end up paying a staggering $52.5 million in buyout fees.
