Over his entire career, this right-handed hitter has a slash line of .261/.316/.349, with a weighted runs created plus (wRC+) of 85. But here's where it gets interesting: against left-handed pitching, his numbers significantly improve to .291/.344/.409 with a wRC+ of 107. This suggests he can be a valuable asset when facing certain pitchers.
What makes Espinal particularly versatile is his ability to play all over the infield. He's logged 196 starts at third base, 180 starts at second base, and 34 starts at shortstop. He's even seen some action in the outfield, with seven starts in right field, six in left, and a couple at first base. This kind of flexibility is always a plus for any team.
And this is the part most people miss: Espinal is now part of the competition for playing time at second base. This is especially relevant because Tommy Edman is expected to begin the regular season on the injured list following surgery on his right ankle in November.
