Heartbreak for Tennessee Basketball: Cade Phillips Out for the Season
It's a tough blow for the Tennessee Volunteers. Junior forward Cade Phillips will be sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a shoulder injury requiring surgery. This news, announced earlier this week, has undoubtedly sent ripples of disappointment through the team and its fans.
Phillips, who has been battling this injury since last season, will undergo surgery on December 12th to repair the damage. The injury initially occurred in January and was aggravated over the summer, making this decision necessary.
In a statement shared on Instagram, Phillips expressed his disappointment but also his commitment to the team: "I pride myself in giving my all for Tennessee not just during games, but every single day. I battled through this injury as much as possible, but it reached a point where surgery is needed." He further stated, "There is nothing I love more than competing alongside my teammates and I'm gutted that I won't be able to take the court with them the rest of the season. Instead, I'm going to do whatever I can to help our group succeed. Thank you, Vol Nation, for your never-ending support."
Phillips has been visibly managing the injury, often wearing a prominent sleeve on his left arm throughout most of this season. This highlights his dedication to the game and his team.
Coach Rick Barnes also weighed in on the situation, emphasizing the importance of Phillips' health: "We will sincerely miss having Cade on the court and he is certainly disappointed he won't be able to play the rest of the season, but it is essential he gets healthy... We love Cade and we'll do everything we can to support him. We know Cade will continue (to) help us this year, even from the sideline, because that is the type of person and teammate he is."
A Look at Phillips' Performance
This season, Phillips started in nine out of ten games, averaging 3.8 points and 4.0 rebounds in 16.9 minutes per game. His shooting percentage from the floor is an impressive 65.4%, though he hasn't attempted a three-pointer and has struggled at the free-throw line, going 4-of-13. He's also shown his prowess on the boards, with 18 offensive rebounds, placing him among the team's top performers, and 11 blocked shots.
Last season, Phillips played in all 38 games, setting a program record for a single season. He averaged 4.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 0.9 blocks, and 0.6 assists in 15.0 minutes per game. He led the team in field-goal percentage, ranked second in blocks and dunks (37), third in offensive rebounding (1.7), and fifth in rebounding.
As a freshman, Phillips played in 13 games, shooting 8-of-9 from the free-throw line and 2-of-3 from the field, with both successful shots being dunks. He finished his freshman season with 12 points and 18 rebounds in 78 minutes.
Phillips, a native of Jacksonville, Alabama, joined the Vols from Link Academy in the Class of 2023. He was ranked as the No. 36 power forward and the No. 144 overall player by 247Sports.
