Avatar: Fire and Ash Box Office Preview - Will It Top Avatar Sequels? (2026)

The upcoming release of ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ is generating significant excitement as it aims to carve its name alongside its predecessors on the all-time box office charts. This anticipation, however, comes with a level of unpredictability that has studio executives sweating bullets over how to navigate the Christmas-New Year’s moviegoing landscape. The challenge lies in the timing of a film's release related to the holiday period, which can drastically influence its box office performance.

This year, 20th Century Studios and Disney are set to launch James Cameron's latest installment in the Avatar saga just before Christmas, specifically on the Friday leading into the holiday. Early projections suggest that the film could open in the domestic market within the range of $95 million to $105 million. For some context, this is notably lower than the remarkable $134 million debut of last year’s Christmas release, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water.’

One crucial aspect to consider is that ‘The Way of Water’ benefited from a full nine days of screenings prior to Christmas, giving it a substantial head start against consumers who were busy with holiday shopping and festivities. In contrast, ‘Fire and Ash’ will only have six days of playtime before the holiday, which may impact its overall earnings.

Reflecting back on the original ‘Avatar,’ which premiered in 2009, the film faced harsh criticism upon its initial $77 million opening weekend. However, that skepticism quickly faded as audiences flocked to theaters, propelling the film to an astonishing global total of $2.9 billion, cementing its status as the highest-grossing film of all time, not adjusted for inflation. It still retains this remarkable title to this day.

‘Fire and Ash’ is poised for an expansive worldwide release and is projected to debut in the global market between $330 million and $340 million. This figure pales in comparison to the sequel's impressive $440 million debut but still demonstrates strong potential. A notable contributor to its success could be its release in China, where director James Cameron enjoys a nearly cult-like following, despite the fact that American films have been experiencing dwindling box office returns there lately. An exception to this trend is Disney’s ‘Zootopia 2,’ which recently surpassed $500 million in China, positioning itself as the second-highest grossing film in that market behind ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Given these circumstances, ‘Fire and Ash’ might also benefit from a favorable reception; the first ‘Avatar’ earned approximately $276 million in China, while its sequel followed closely with $246 million.

Cameron, known for his advocacy of 3D cinema and his expertise in Imax technology, has been actively promoting ‘Fire and Ash’ globally. He has ambitious plans for the franchise, with potential fourth and fifth installments already in the pipeline—though what constitutes a 'plan' in Cameron's world might be up for some debate.

However, ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ isn’t the only film vying for audience attention during this holiday season. Also making their debut on December 19 are Paramount’s family-oriented feature ‘The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants’ and Lionsgate’s thriller ‘The Housemaid,’ which stars Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney. This particular film pays homage to ’90s cinema and serves as a litmus test for Sweeney, especially after her previous project, ‘Christy,’ did not meet Oscar expectations. It is anticipated to gross between $20 million and $25 million upon release. Additionally, Angel Studios’ animated film ‘David’ is similarly projected to fall within that same financial range.

As we approach Christmas Day, more films will be unveiled, including Sony’s reboot of ‘Anaconda,’ though its box office performance remains uncertain at this time. Meanwhile, on the more prestigious front, potential Oscar contenders such as ‘Marty Supreme,’ featuring Timothée Chalamet, and ‘Sing Song Blue,’ starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, will also be released nationwide.
